I have never once built anything useful out of enthusiasm. Enthusiasm survives any idea for about a week, which makes it worthless as evidence. Resentment is better data. It is specific, it repeats on a schedule, and it shows up at precisely the point where a process is badly designed.
So I keep a file. One line every time a task annoys me, with the date, and no solutions in it — writing the solution is how you talk yourself out of noticing the problem again next week. After a month that file is a requirements document nobody could have written for me, because it is assembled entirely out of my own irritation and the timestamps prove which friction is real.
Steward and Offcut are both in that file, four months apart, each logged eleven or twelve times before I opened an editor. The rule I use now: the fourth time is a feature, the tenth time is a product. Under four times, I am not onto something. I am just tired.
